Accordion Tent |
Compact for efficient transportation and easy to expand and install, theAccordion Tent was designed to provide fast temporary accommodation after natural disasters.
After a natural disaster it is common for many people to find themselves homeless. Sturdy temporary accommodation is needed quickly. Ordinary tents are not easy to handle due to their complex structures. The Accordion Tent offers an accommodation solution that is easy to transport and easy to build.
Taking its inspiration from the musical instrument, the Accordion Tent takes up little space when compressed, but becomes a large enclosed space when it is unfolded. Its expansion simply involves grabbing the side rails and pulling. The ‘instant’ installation allows accommodation to be provided rapidly after a disaster. The Accordion Tent can be delivered to a disaster site by helicopter, road, or rail.
Aside from its potential use for accommodation, the Accordion Tent could also be used for schools, hospitals, or rescue headquarters. |

Parachute Shelter |
This system for the provision of shelter and aid after natural disasters incorporates a dual-use parachute.
The damage to roads and other infrastructure caused by natural disasters can prevent the rapid provision of shelter and aid materials to survivors. Parachutes, however, can be used for aid delivery and distribution. Parachute Shelter provides both an aid kit and a shelter.
The parachute itself was inspired by the structure of umbrellas. Its folding frame opens when the parachute is dropped from the supply plane, and allows the parachute to be utilised as a stiff shelter on the ground. The aid box contains food, clothing, and emergency medical supplies. |

Sanctuary |
Sanctuary is a temporary emergency shelter solution that alleviates the immediate need to provide safety and security for survivors of natural disasters. It may also provide temporarily shelter for those made homeless by armed conflict.
The overarching goal of Sanctuary is to create a sense of order out of chaos and normalcy out of unpredictability. When Sanctuary is fully deployed in an environment, it creates a natural collection of groups by simple virtue of the fact that its friendly rotund shape promotes interaction and fosters an outwardly attitude in the collective conscience.
Sanctuary is created with DuPont Tyvek – a material that is lightweight, moisture-repelling, resistant to tears and chemicals, flexible, recyclable, and resistant to blood and water-borne microbes. Furthermore, the shell is made of a dual layer of this material to increase its durability and insulation qualities and compensate for fluctuations in temperature. The structure is made with a biodegradable potato starch wireframe, which automatically springs to shape from its flat, compressed state.
The floor of the shelter is reinforced with an environmentally friendly, biodegradable, water-repellent coating that is protective for up to 20cm above ground height. The top surface of Sanctuary is coated with highly reflective 3M paint for visibility in low light conditions. This allows rescuers to easily detect survivors from rescue planes and helicopters.
Due to the sheer nature of its circular shape and human-friendly scale, Sanctuaryis highly mobile; a simple roll can transfer it to its appropriate location. Sanctuary is stable and secure by way of underside flaps, which can be filled with rocks and debris to easily secure the shelter from strong winds or inclement weather.
Included underneath the floor are basic supplies to help keep survivors comfortable and as dry as possible in such dire situations: a first-aid kit for minor wounds; purified water for drinking and rinsing wounds; towels for keeping dry; sandals for barefoot survivors; blankets for warmth; and nutrient bars for basic sustenance. |

Contour Crafter |
The world’s megacities are constantly and rapidly growing. According to the United Nations, 4.5 billion people will be living in cities by 2025. The rapid construction of living spaces is necessary. Contour Crafter offers a construction method that combines industrial production and the technique of rapid prototyping.
Based on development by Behrokh Khoshnevis of the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute, this ‘house printer’ was conceived for megacities in industrialised nations where living spaces are urgently needed and manpower is very expensive. Contour Crafter is able to ‘print’ a two-storey family house. As soon as the machine’s setup is complete, the construction process runs automatically. A robot prints contours of a building shell layer by layer using fast-drying concrete. Within a few weeks, a whole housing estate could be produced.
The machine prints using a nozzle with three injectors – two for the side contours and one for the filling. A special house wall type was designed based on the example of aeronautic lightweight construction. The wall leaves are solid and enclose captured air. While the wall is produced, the robot leaves gaps for pipework. The prearrangement of the construction and the finishing still requires direct human input. The client’s advantage is the low-cost industrial production and the customisation of the house to the geographic, climatic, and social needs.
The study at hand conceptualises the first generation of Contour Crafter outside a laboratory. To date, there have been two generations of Contour Crafterdeveloped in laboratories. One displayed its capabilities by building a model, and the other was able to print walls with a length and height of two metres. The goal of the research is to print one building shell per day. |

Mission R |
The Mission R is a high-performance electric racing motorcycle designed for international racing competitions and as a development test bed for new class-leading electric-drive systems. It incorporates unique electrical technologies and advanced software to achieve new levels of performance and efficiency for alternative-energy vehicles.
Mission Motors of San Francisco, California develops advanced technology to control electric-drive systems in various types of alternative-energy vehicles. To get the most out of an R&D program, it is important to develop these systems by testing them under the most demanding circumstances and not just in the lab. Mission developed the Mission R because the added challenges inherent in racing-motorcycle design would benefit the development of their new EV drive trains.
The Mission R is the third generation of development prototypes and encompasses the very latest technological advancements developed by Mission Motors. It performs exceptionally well, and won its inaugural race (by a large margin) at the combined TTXPG/FIM E-Power race at the USGP (United States Grand Prix) in July 2011. It uses a 14 kilowatt-hour lithium-polymer battery pack to power its three-phase AC induction electric motor through an inverter, which is critical for gaining the optimum power and efficiency from the batteries.
In addition to developing the electric power train systems was the challenge of creating an exciting and highly functional racer – one that would be highly recognisable and stand as the icon representing Mission Motors as a leader in EV power train systems development. For the progress of alternative energy vehicles, it is important for them to gain wider acceptance. A way to encourage this is to make them aesthetically compelling as well as a viable option to internal combustion engine vehicles. The Mission R continues to work as a development prototype and racer, representing the unique design and engineering capabilities of Mission Motors. |

Concept design of tractor NOVO |
How might the tractor look in a couple of years’ time? Perhaps something like NOVO. This conceptual tractor design transitions between present-day and futuristic autonomous tractors. This futuristic individual-service agrarian machine represents progressive ideas about tractor construction and body. This design incorporates a different attitude to the creation of the cabin, engine cover, body, wheels, tyres, and other segments, as well as the position of the lights. It also uses a different method of whole-tractor composition, which takes into consideration important elements related to correct functioning and ergonomics. The main designed parts of the tractor are created with ‘dynamic’ surfaces and elements that appear to have aerodynamic tendencies (in line with trend views). This highlights the logic of a moving object. NOVO’s design also places emphasis on the function and stability of the chassis, the suspension, and the tyres. Overall, the concept embodies the philosophy of a powerful and dominant machine that does a rewarding job for people in difficult conditions. |

Leverage Freedom Chair |
Wheelchairs bring the gift of mobility to millions of disabled individuals, until rough terrain gets in the way. What if people could gain more flexibility regardless of nature’s conditions? The Leverage Freedom Chairshows how this is possible.Continuum helped MIT’s Mobility Lab envision the next generation of theLeverage Freedom Chair – a high-performance version that is funding the original prototype designed to help the disabled in developing countries. With variable speed controls (just like high or low gears on a mountain bike), the new off-road chair was impactful from the start. It moved 34% faster on flat ground and got 53% higher torque on rough terrain. Most importantly, it delivered a newfound sense of emotional independence. The challenge was to take the design that had already been prototyped by the MIT Mobility Lab for emerging markets, and transform it into a high-end recreational wheelchair for Western markets. The design team was challenged to find opportunities to reduce weight and mass, streamline the construction, and create an iconic visual language that would resonate with users. The Leverage Freedom Chair is 40% more effective at traversing rough terrain than a conventional wheelchair. The chair has a stripped-down skeletal look that highlights its iconic, arc-shaped central spine. A footrest attached to the central spine provides just enough surface area to support the user’s feet. A carbon-fibre seat frame cradles the user’s body to give lightweight support. The chair features a single-coil suspension system to make the ride more comfortable. The lever system allows the rider to instantly adjust their "gear ratio" by changing the position of the hands. Custom parts are fabricated from aluminium and carbon fibre for lightness, and off-the-shelf bike parts make theLeverage Freedom Chair easy to maintain. An elastic mesh seat back provides the right breathable support. |

VALTRA ANTS - farming the future |
ANTS concept tractor has been designed for Valtra’s traditional customer segment: Family farms averaging 150 hectares in size, with the same number of livestock.Building on the tradition of innovation and customization for which Valtra is renowned. ANTS offers customized power source, improved efficiency, minimized environmental impact, pronounced flexibility, maximum versatility and improved comfort on a platform that can be adapted to the wider range of future farming needs.ANTS is a modular solution. It comprises of two basic modules with hybrid electric or full electric drive train: The soldier, with a power of some 100 kW, and the worker, with a power of 200 kW. Both can act together or work individually. When executing heavy work the modules can be interlocked. The front wheels of the soldier is adjusted to a narrow track, while the front wheels of the other machine are moved abreast and the machines interlock. In this mode a queen becomes available, with articulated steering and maximum power of 400 kW.Each of the machines wheels is connected to the chassis via a suspension beam. The stiffness and position of the beams can be
individually adjusted. This means the tractor stays level on all terrain, guaranteeing optimal implement position and maximum driving comfort at all times and the height of the machine can be adjusted to different work environments. The cab is a capsule that can be attached to both basic modules. It can rotate and may be placed at the front, rear or on top of the
basic module. The cab may be lowered for safe access; most tractor related accidents occur when getting in and out of the cab.The ANTS loader tool combines features of traditional front loaders, tele-handlers and forest machines. The loader consists of dual beams that is attached to the same pivot point as the cab. This way the loader can turn together with the cab, allowing for full visibility and control. Both loader beams can be controlled individually, making the loader available for a wide range of applications. |
