Barbecues are as much fun as they are headaches. When the party’s over, the cleaning process and stowing away is always such a big problem. Inspired by the retro video game cartridge, we have here the Cartridge Grill, a seamless combination of heater and grill-plate. It promises to be as much fun with an easier cleaning process. The good news is that you won’t have to wait till summer for some BBQ action, this baby works all year round!

Ease is a washing machine specially designed for the silver generation and for those living with aches and pains. The ergonomics in design and clever 45-degree angle of the drum mouth make it easy to reach in for the clothes. If only it could look a bit slimmer and occupy less space, it would be perfect!

The B.Y Handle Lock is an oversimplified lock for cycles. An extending wire from one end of the handle loops into the tire of the cycle, and is secured via a number lock on the other side. A few points of refinements come to my mind, like the wire should be made retractable so that coiling it back into the handle shouldn’t be a hassle. The other point is of course, the wire should be heavy duty so that it can be secured to a fence or a tree. Otherwise, it’s a pretty neat idea, what do you think?

The Almost Home Shelter is the result of a collaborative student observation of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami survivors and how emergency relief could be adapted to better suit subsistence users rather than those of developed nations. The simple modular shelter is easy to assemble and customizable to various living situations, mimicking the community environments found in rural villages and encourages people to interact as they would before the disaster.

Taking jam sessions to another level is the idea of recycling discarded, useless Compact Disks as weights for dumbbells. Before you laugh off the idea, here is something we can consider…many women don’t use heavy weights for their workouts, and an average CD weighs about .15 grams. Combining a handful at each end, it does put the CDs to good use! If nothing else, I’m impressed with the out-of-the-box thinking. Totally rad!

When it comes to mountaineering, a good ice axe can mean the difference between life and death. Noticing technical setbacks and an overall lack of comfort of current axes, designer Katrina Epperson developed the Condor to be more ergonomic and easy to use. Its curved shaft allows the whole hand to grip the axe in a natural position. An injection molded rubber head provides additional comfort and protects hands from the cold, hard steel. All it’s missing is the mountain!

Besides the washing machine, most Indian women depends heavily on the Dhobi (aka washer man) to wash the house linen. Heavy-duty laundry is always assigned to this curious breed of people (dhobi), who carry their load to the nearest dhobi ghat and manually launder the towels, bed sheets, trousers etc. Crisp ironed linen and clothes are handed back after a week and the next stack is lined up for collection. Indra is a concept washing machine to aid the dhobi with his washing and make life more easier for him.
Manual labor is cheaper in India than using electricity and machines. Thus the Indra is designed on this premise. A look at this video here will give you an idea on how the dhobis function.
Incase you are wondering, my dhobi comes in every Monday for collecting the clothes!

A show of hands please, all those of you dreading shoveling the sidewalk this winter! It’s quite a task and the toll it takes on your wrists … the less said the better. Xovel is an ergonomically modified shovel that promises to be easy on your body. It comes with a double-grip handle at the neck so that the forces are distributed in a more balanced and effective way. An integrated torchlight in the arm is quite a thoughtful addition. Snow on sidewalks, here I come!

What will happen if we shift the mouth of the bottle from the top to a 45-degree angle? You may not be able to fill it to the brim, and drinking from it may be a bit weird, but filling the bottle from a water cooler or fountain will surely become easy. This simple placement difference can do a heck lot for the packaging design and I think it’s radical and awesome.
