TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Law Enforcement Police discovered and seized 34.25 kg of opium from a truck in downtown Tehran last night, a local police officer announced on Saturday

Officers of the police station at Tehran's Fruit and Vegetable market last night became suspicious of a truck which seemed to be loaded with a cargo of cucumber and an inspection of the vehicle revealed that it was trafficking 34.25kg opium," Captain Kiumarth Hassanvand told FNA.
He noted that the police have arrested 4 individuals in this regard, while 2 more are still at large.
Earlier, Commander of the anti-drug squad of Iran's Law Enforcement Police announced that the country's police forces have discovered 340 tons of different types of illicit drugs during the last nine months.
"More than 340 tons of drugs have been seized all over Iran in the past nine months," General Hamid Reza Hossein-Abadi said.
The United Nations credits Iran with the seizure of 80 percent of the opium netted around the world.
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost more than 3300 of their personnel in the country's combat against narcotics.
During the past Iranian year (ended on March 20,) Iran seized more than 1,000 tons of opium smuggled from Afghanistan, the largest producer of opium poppy in the world
