This idea was born in a backyard and will leave you wondering, “why didn’t I think of that!?” – The GRILLIT light attaches to any outdoor grill to provide instant illumination to the cooking space each time the hood is opened. Simply slide and twist the barrel to direct light where needed. It’s a great “set it and forget it” solution!

The ES Pipe Waterwheel concept works as a mini turbine to harness hydropower from regular water taps and converts it to energy. However this energy is for a specific use; to power specialized bulbs. The intended area of use is a country like Africa where there is severe power shortage. On paper, the idea looks good enough to execute, however how large scale can this go, remains to be seen.

ES Pipe Waterwheel is a 2012 IDEA awards entry.

Ever gone to the park and found someone else sitting on your favorite bench? Ever wished your bench was turned the other way because you like the other view better? This genius outdoor bench design offers a solution to both. Each bench system consists of 4 seats that can easily be tilted in the direction the user prefers, or to simply put a little space between you and strangers. Not to mention, its fantastic to look at!

The only time I’ve been so obsessed with bandages was when I spied the jewel encrusted Cynthia Rowley’s Limited Edition (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150103882371959&set=a.421605441958.210827.39644961958&type=3&theater). This Chameleon Bandage takes the concept of band-aid protection a notch higher by becoming literally invisible. I suppose there must be some chemical elements to it. However the designers have not clarified it as yet. Imagine how cool will it be to sport a bandage that blends with your skin tone, especially for those awkward places on your chin or cheek! Me wants one now!

Camera-toting EyeRing could help blind people to "see" objects
Generally speaking, the vast majority of augmented reality applications that enhance the world around us by overlaying digital content on images displayed on smartphone, tablet or computer screens are aimed squarely at the sighted user. A team from the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT's Media Lab has developed a chunky finger-worn device called EyeRing that translates images of objects captured through a camera lens into aural feedback to aid the blind.

http://images.gizmag.com/gallery_tn/eyering-1.JPG (http://www.gizmag.com/eyering-object-recognition-aural-feedback-mit/23677/pictures#1)
http://images.gizmag.com/gallery_tn/eyering-3.JPG (http://www.gizmag.com/eyering-object-recognition-aural-feedback-mit/23677/pictures#2)
http://images.gizmag.com/gallery_tn/eyering-4.JPG (http://www.gizmag.com/eyering-object-recognition-aural-feedback-mit/23677/pictures#3)

The EyeRing system was created by Suranga Nanayakkara (who currently directs the Augmented Senses Research Group at Singapore University of Technology and Design), PhD student Roy Shilkrot and associate professor and founder of the Fluid Interfaces Group, Pattie Maes. It features a 3D-printed ABS nylon outer housing containing a small VGA camera unit, a 16 MHz AVR processor, a Bluetooth radio module and a 3.7V Li-ion battery. There's also a mini-USB port for charging the battery and reprogramming the unit, a power on/off switch and a thumb-activated button for confirming commands.
http://images.gizmag.com/inline/eyering-3.JPG (http://www.gizmag.com/eyering-object-recognition-aural-feedback-mit/23677/pictures#2)
The user points the ring's camera at an object, tells the system what kind of information is needed via a microphone on the earphone cord and then clicks the button on the side of the unit. The camera snaps a photo and sends it to a Bluetooth-linked smartphone. A specially-developed Android app processes the image using computer-vision algorithms according to the preset mode selected by the user and uses a text-to-speech module to announce the appropriate results through earphones plugged into the smartphone.
The proof-of-concept prototype EyeRing system can currently be used to identify currency, text, pricing information on tags, and colors, and the preset mode can be changed by double-clicking the button and speaking a different command into the microphone. The information is also displayed on the screen of the smartphone in text form.
Other applications for the system include cane-free navigation. The current version determines the distance from objects by comparing two images taken by the camera, and can even create a 3D map of the surrounding environment. Future implementations might include the ability to shoot live video and provide all sorts of useful information to the wearer.
The EyeRing project is still very much a work in progress, with Maes confirming that any moves toward commercialization are likely at least two years away. The group is already working on an iOS flavor, though, and size and shape refinements are certain to be made (think Ringbow (http://www.gizmag.com/ringbow-touchscreen-enhancement-device-production/23140/)).
Single-user tests with a volunteer have confirmed the existing system's assistance potential, but the addition of more sensors (such as an infrared light source or a laser module, a second camera, a depth sensor or inertial sensors) to the finger-worn device could open it up to whole new levels of usefulness.

Part functional public seating solution, part kinetic sculpture, the Bend Bench was designed around a unique frame that makes it possible to rotate both vertically and horizontally. It can spin like a merry-go-round to face any direction for different views. Once in position, one side can be flipped vertically to provide shade or cover from the rain over the other. Simply flip it back down to double the space for others to sit. One of the most versatile bench designs we’ve seen!

Citrus Fresh Squeeze You got to simply love the handy Citrus Spray designed by Alberto Arza and Joan Rojeski for Spanish houseware brand Lékué (http://www.lekue.es/)! It is so simple and a surefire way to get freshly squeezed lime juice (or any other citrus fruit) sprayed over your food! Can it get simpler than this – just stick in the spraying mechanism through the cut-off wedge and get spraying!

The biggest advantage is preventing the loss of vitamins and oxidation of the juice.

Ten Innovative Award Winning Concepts at A’ Design Awards Innovation is a very relative term and can resonate differently to people. One of the definitions I learnt was that innovations should be something new; should generate curiosity and debate; and lastly should be doable. Barring the doable criteria, I guess most of what is defined is true. When we chart the course of the A’ Design Awards (http://www.adesignaward.com/), we see some really innovative concepts showcased (http://designmag.org/) that have generated enough traction to warrant a conversation.

Here is a look at ten innovative award winning concepts that have won the A’ Design Awards (http://www.adesignaward.com/).

Smile Please! There is a growing trend in concept cameras to include simple gestures to control its functions. We first saw this with the Air Clicker Camera (http://www.yankodesign.com/2011/11/18/two-finger-camera/) and now it’s surfaced once again with the Take Frame. The idea here is to ‘crop’ the picture you want to click using the two crop tools, just like how you would use your thumb and forefinger. Interesting the way this industry is innovating.

Water to the Rescue One of the major challenges for those effected by natural flood disasters is finding clean drinking water. The Source of Water concept aims to help those in need get clean water quickly and conveniently. The design is based on a simple principle that water pressure around the tube will push through the purifying layers, producing drinkable water with very little effort. The user simply has to drop the tubular filter in the center of the cross within the buoyant ring and remove when full.

retrofit Wheelchair Enhancement Synergise is a thoughtful wheelchair add-on, retro-fittable on almost any existing model, that aims to help users navigate more effectively and efficiently. Akin to having bicycle brakes, the ratchet system allows wheelchair users to negotiate angled surfaces with reduced friction and increased efficiency over endurance with reduced risks of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) to the user.
The two-way ratchet mechanism is based on a wheel that has teeth cut out of it and a pawl that follows as the wheel turns. It can only go in one direction with the pawl in place, lifting one pawl and placing the other pawl on the other side makes the shaft go in the other direction. Cables linked to a shifter on the handlebar would lift the pawls. Each lever has independent control allowing the user to go forward, backward and rotate on the spot.
The brake is a rope dynamometer attached to the shaft with the main cog which is a frictional brake. A metallic strip is in a grooved spool and when you pull the brake lever, the cable pulls the strip and touches the spool creating friction and slowing down the wheelchair in a controlled manner. This is a useful tool to reduce stress going across cambered surfaces and cornering as well as braking.

Dry in a Jiffy The SecO clothes dryer bridges the gap between large tumble dryers and clothing lines in an intuitive appliance that’s no bigger than a coat rack. It uses long wave infrared ceramic heaters with radiant directional wavelengths that oscillate water molecules, making them evaporate so that clothes are dry and wrinkle free in minutes. Ideal for compact apartments, the design folds down and can easily be stored under a bed or in a closet. It’s a quick and easy solution after you’ve been out in the rain or just need a quick dry for damp garments.

The base unit contains a low power, practically silent fan which draws the moist air down through holes in the aluminium tube and through a dehumidifying container in the base. This container holds self-indicating colour changing desiccant silica beads which dehumidifies the air. As the beads become saturated their colour changes so the user is aware they soon need recharging. When fully saturated, the beads can be recharged by placing in a microwave.
SecO will intuitively communicate the state of drying to the user. When it is switched on frosted LED backlit panels illuminate. Humidity sensors determine the humidity of the immediate surrounding area. As the clothes get dryer, the humidity decreases and this is visually represented by the LEDs becoming dimmer. The user can determine the clothes are getting dryer without having to touch them.
Far infrared ceramic technology only uses low watt ceramic heaters. The other electronic components also only use a very low amount of power. This results in incredible low running costs of 5p an hour with an average running time, to dry 6kg of washing, of 4 hours. This is respectively the best and cheapest way to dry your clothes. It won’t damage your clothes like some tumble dryers. It has no carbon emissions, is it completely eco-friendly and won’t leave drying lines like some mechanical airers.

power Wash The DualWash reminds me of the Electrolux Design Lab concept Bifoliate Double Dishwasher (http://www.yankodesign.com/2009/08/13/no-more-double-trouble/). The idea is similar, to have a wall mounted dishwasher that doubles up as a storage cabinet. However the DualWash features some newer innovations. This two sided dishwasher uses carbon-dioxide cleaning rather than water-based cleaning.

How it Works:
When the washing cycle is started, Carbon-dioxide cycle is activated, and Supercritical Carbon-dioxide is pumped to the cleaning chamber. Supercritical Carbon-dioxide has a very low surface tension, meaning instead of beading up into a ball like water, it spreads out widely covering all surfaces. During the washing cycle, Carbon-dioxide flows around the machine and cleans it. For solid particles, Supercritical Carbon-dioxide is turned to gas phase and food particle filter holds contaminates. The filter can be removed and cleaned.

easy Chemical Free Fertilizing
The EcoFeed fertilizing system utilize natural material such as compost & nettles to create a liquid fertilizer, known as compost tea, which helps plant growth & prevents disease. Simply add homemade compost into the filter basket & connect the product to your outdoor hose. Hose water running through the tank creates a siphon, mixing the concentrated compost tea with the water which dilutes the mixture for use on plants. No need for harmful chemical fertilizers!

Better Than McDonalds?
I love the McDonalds French Fries and the red box that they serve it in. But I think the potatogether is a tad better concept and something all French Fries vendors should consider. The bag makes it easy to get to the fires and once torn open it serves as a handy plate or dish. Simple and functional, I think design is a winner!

Simple Coffee Fix The ‘Stir Then Squeeze’ is neither the first nor the last attempt in unifying the coffee-creamer-stirrer process. However what makes this attempt stand out, is the perfect methodology involved in the coffee – creamer dispensing. How Big Is Your Printer?

God forbid if you are the unlucky bloke who gets to sit on a table that houses the office printer. They are a blessing and a bane, simply because they occupy so much of space. Maybe this is why concepts like the Retractable Printer are much more appealing. Imagine a sleek device that spans out according to the size of paper you are printing. Simple thought for a practical way of working in an office! Super!

Wild Stroller of the Savannahs

The latest design from Casualplay, Kudu Stroller, just goes to show that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places! Inspired by the beautiful African antelope of the same name, this wild design takes from the elegant yet robust body of the animal. Simplistic lines and invisible welds also give it a seamless, minimalist aesthetic.

It’s not only pretty, but super functional. The design features a collapsible backrest with 3 positions.
Multiple positions of the backrest mean the child can sit up comfortably while awake or completely lie down while asleep. This fully reclined position means it can also be used as a changing mat anywhere.
In addition, there’s also a reverse seat that in just one movement can be placed in any position desired, facing forwards or facing the parents.

Professor Sheila Kennedy and architecture students at MIT has developed an interesting sun lounger with built-in solar recharger. They call it the SOFT rocker, which is an outdoor furniture that could be used as for study, while user can recharge their gadget.
http://assets.hardwaresphere.com/uploads/soft-rocker-sun-lounger.jpgThe SOFT Rocker has an intergrated solar panel along the bent roof, and it’s connected to the base with with built-in rechargeable battery and USB ports. The battery is a 12-ampere hour battery, which is sufficient to provide juice for devices even after sunset.http://assets.hardwaresphere.com/uploads/soft-rocker-sun-lounger-charge-station.jpgThis SOFT rocker also possible of using human power of balance to create 1.5 axis, 35 watt solar tracking system. When at night time, SOFT rocker has a built-in LED light system that looks very cool for park/yard/garden decoration.http://assets.hardwaresphere.com/uploads/soft-rocker-sun-lounger-at-night.jpg

The leaf-like loop form of the SOFT Rockers explores how standard softwood panels can be mass-customized to adapt to the latitude and sun angle of any site using parametric design software and automated fabrication with a lightweight Kuka robotic arm. The SOFT Rocker combines hi-tech and low-tech design strategies: it produces electricity but engages the body and works like furniture “by hand”; it mixes sun tracking and social dynamics; it is a site specific object and a flexible form family of ‘soft’ wood construction. The SOFT Rocker blurs distinctions between pleasure and work and recasts power generation as an integrated and distributed public activity rather than a centralized, singular off-site project of engineering.

“It’s Zero Wherever You Like”, yes, it’s a new concept of ruler for designer who love to draw measured straight lines. Designer Chul Sung Ahn, Chang Dae Jeon, Da Hye Lee and Hee Chul Kwak and come out with a special ruler called “0 Point Ruler” which will always show you the ’0′ mark whenever you touch the ruler with pencil or pen. It’s basically a pressure-sensitive ruler edge with digital marking on the body of the ruler, much like the electronic ruler (http://www.hardwaresphere.com/2009/07/05/convenience-electronic-ruler-for-automatic-measurement/) that we have seen in the yesteryear.
Obviously, this type of device would be a battery-powered or it won’t show you anything at all. Luckily, you don’t have to replace the battery as the designers have thought a better alternative. See that hollow red gear-like design on the ruler? Just put your finger into the hollow space, and swing it around to recharge the battery. Kirrrrrr!
http://assets.hardwaresphere.com/uploads/2012/05/0-point-ruler-concept-kir.jpg
It’s simple, but effective. No wonder why they could won the iF Design Talents of 2012! I can’t wait to get a hold of such ruler, even I’m not a pro designer, this type of ruler is a must-have!

Furniture for Plants
Tweet

The inspiration behind the O furniture series came from our human tendency to sporadically place plants and pots at home and was crafted with a top surface perfect for containing these plants. The shallow, sunken top is lined with handcrafted ceramic vessels of different size, balancing and softening the rigid geometry of the console and credenza. Maybe you’re not a fan of indoor plants- the unique structure offers an unusual way of storing a multitude of items from books to knick knacks.

Jellyfish Ahoy!

I remember gazing at the jellyfish with utter amazement in Hong Kong’s Ocean Park aquarium. Little did I know that their sting can be so painful and apparently some species’ sting can actually prove fatal for humans! I love the ocean and shudder to think how would it feel to get stung. The Ocean Guard is a series of buoys that use ultra-low frequency sound waves to prevent jellyfish from entering certain areas. It is a safer way to keep them at bay, without harming them. Peaceful co-existence I suppose.

Ocean Guard is an IDEA Award (http://www.idsa.org/)winning entry.

Coffee Formula

If things had gone right for Behzad then the Pirelli Coffee Mug Concept would have been a flamboyant prized possession of some Formula One Racing fan. However destiny had other plans and the project was shelved. Being a coffee addict and Formula One fan, I just cannot resist not having one of these in my collection. With the modern tools available, I am positive this concept will look sexier in real life than it does on paper right now!

drying Rails
Tweet

The Rail Type Laundry Rack is a rework on the traditional drying rack. It features sliding hanging rails and a grooved frame, which allow the rack to be adjusted so that it gets easy to hang the laundry. Typically the rails on most laundry racks are fixed at equal distances, so it may get difficult to dry two jeans in adjacent rails. With the Rail Type Laundry Rack, you can adjust the distances between the two rails and hang clothes accordingly.

Solar And Customized Cell

The Super Battery is a thought-provoking concept. What we have here is an expandable strip that opens up to get recharged in the sun. It rounds up to the shape of AA, AAA and C-sized battery. Basically you can customize the size depending on what you need and recharge it via the solar cells. Here is an innovation that can be refined and perfected to make it to the shelves. What do you say?

Square Is Better
Tweet

The Square Funnel is a redesign of the typical kitchen aid that is used to transfer and pour liquids in a small-mouthed bottle. A research done by the designers showed that round funnels took a longer time to drain the liquid. The square funnel increases the speed of the liquid draining into the bottle considerably and it prevents an overspill too. In layman’s terms, the physics involved allows the quadrate funnel to control the inequalities in the change of air pressure inside and outside the bottle; thus enabling a swift transfer of liquids.

AN-GLUE may come across as a frivolous solution to the glue stick design. But when you are the person who is sealing envelopes or gluing stuff; then you’re gonna be real happy that you have this angled design in hand. For the record, it can be difficult to see the paper when we are applying glue to it, because the gluing hand blocks our line of sight. The angled tip makes it easier to see the gluing path and is easier to use.

The base has a ridge that prevents the stick from rolling off the table. Although it is thinner than typical glue sticks, the angled tip makes the application diameter the same as thicker glue sticks.

Take Whats There and Make Energy

One of the greatest things you can do as an industrial designer with earth-saving aspirations is to find a source of free or nearly-free energy. That’s what Luís Castanheira appears very much to have done here. This is Voltair, a wind power generator comprised of an array of fans set on the median of a highway, each of them turned by the air pushed past by the cars speeding by. The cars that’d be going by one way or another. Brilliant!

The main goal of this project, having had the general idea in mind, was to reduce the complexity of the product as much as possible. In doing so, Castanheira was left with a base that supports a power generator, a body composed of a set of curved blades, and a safety cover fixing all components.

Saving The Eyesight

Children are stubborn and they don’t understand that viewing the computer (or TV) screen from too near a distance can affect their eyesight. As a victim of wearing glasses right from the eight grade, I have learnt this the hard way too. So designers Zhichao Xue & Chen Yizi have a very clever solution at hand. Place the I-CARE sensor on top of any screen and it keeps a check on the distance from which a person is viewing the screen. When the distance is less than 50 cm, the screen blurs up, forcing the person to step back for a crystal clear display.
I-CARE uses the human instinct rather than the preaching of the parents, and it can make the children take the initiative to adjust to the appropriate distance, so as to protect their eyes.

I-CARE is a 2012 Liton Award (http://www.liteonaward.com/) Winning entry

It would appear that the way to lead with light might soon be by way of crutch – at least that’s how the designers behind the Leader would have it. The full name of these devices is “Leader Outdoor Crutches” and their designers, Cathy Wen and Linxi Lee, have made it clear that there will be no more darkness on the trail as long as they’re at the head of the pack.

Leader Outdoor Crutches aim to not just allow you to make your way through the woods with that extra bit of push up on the stick, but with some much-needed illumination at night as well. Just pop in the lamp and you’ll be headed to your camp site in no time. This invention would certainly save us some stumble time heading up the stairs after some late-night laundry too, mind you – perhaps a home edition is in order!

But HOW?? You’ll have to check out the video after the jump to see just how this incredible multitasking machine works!

The first screen is formed by two sets: a framework that allows the folding of the entire screen, and an inner screen which can perform a rotation of 180 °, which at its rear part includes a 12.1 Mpx camera with 16x digital zoom and video recording at 1080p HD. In addition, a flash light that improves the quality of photos. On one side is a LED that spares the user from having to open Wallet to check if they have received a call, message or any other notifications. Moreover, this screen also includes a microphone and a speaker for calls, so it can be used without opening it. At the top corner of the frame are connectors for standard 3.5mm headphones to avoid burden when it is used as widescreen and next to it is a power button for easy accessibility.
The second screen has a built-in support in the outer casing made of Technogel. Eventhough this material can be easily bendable, it is also strong enough for the support to carry the entire weight of Wallet. The Technogel is an innovative material invented by an Italian company. Among its many properties are resistance to shocks, large durability and high protection. At the top of the screen is a standard micro USB connector type B which serves to connect any peripherals items (mouse, keyboard, printer, and even a TV). Additionally, it can be connected to a computer to recharge. The connecter is located in a spot where it does not interfere when it is used as a tablet or widescreen.

It’s time for another new angle on the USB power-packing accessory universe, this time with one that stays in the wall socket and conserves energy. You plug this little nubbin in to the power socket, wait for it to pop up like a turkey, and grab some power. This accessory stops taking power from the socket once it’s charged up, allowing that power then to filter through its two USB ports to your smart devices.

Other than the power collecting abilities, this device isn’t all that unique. With the pop-out action, this device becomes indispensable. I’d certainly like to have a handful of these for heading out to a tech convention or even sitting around the apartment – wouldn’t you?

I have always been a fan of fridge magnets; it is one of the sleekest ways to stay in touch with family via notes and even be in the loop with latest family happenings. The power strip design you’re about to witness allows you to plug in from any direction and at any point along the length of it. Designer Hung Wang created a design here that allows Live / Neutral-wire slots to sit next to one another no matter which of the four directions you plug in from. This power strip goes by the name of “CROSS” and without a doubt aims to keep all manner of electronics in energy in as versatile a manner as possible.

If you take a milk carton and flip the top upside-down, what do you have? You have a design made by none other than designer Sheau Shiuan Lin. When we first had a peek at this design, it seemed awfully similar to a design we saw just days previous (for some of us) at our children’s daycare center – a milk carton, but with a flat top rather than a peak. Instead, we’ve got something just a tiny bit different.

Have a peek at the fold-up and straw design posted here that goes by the name “StrawIN” and let us know what you think. Is it so close to the original milk carton we use everyday that it cannot be considered new? Or is it simply brilliant?

It’s time to get in the laser-projector zone with none other than a design by the name of “Bike Zone”, complete with red beams for signaling. If you want to turn left, this beast of a light shines several arrow-looking symbols down at the ground to the left – the same is true of the right – imagine that! The only ones we worry for now are the squirrels – watch your eyes, guys!

This design creates a one-meter “safety zone” for the cyclist with lights that allow drivers at night to tell where the cyclist is going. Animated signal action makes for twice the safety and clarity in representation of direction while the whole design is contained in a tiny backpack-storage-ready container.

At a recent event I was up in arms, struggling with my DSLR in an awkward stance, trying to capture the best shots for the day. In walked my friend with an adept digital camera and took some amazing photographs (if not better), and he didn’t even have to struggle with his equipment. So the question is, does high-tech photography equipment have to be bulky and difficult to manage? The IO Camera Concept says no!
The IO Camera Concept shows that the large-format camera can be built seductively ergonomic. The multi-format digital camera platform can achieve 35mm format convenience and quality. It supports large-format (up to 90 x 120 millimeters or even more) digital sensors. With its flexible changeable bayonet, it supports the majority of contemporary middle- and large-format lenses.
Features:

IO feels comfortable in your hands, is great to take along for point-and-shoot photography, and its supporting capabilities of tilt-shift techniques (when using an external tripod and flex) are convenient to use.
The concept is to redesign and give a new face to the typical large-format camera and counteract the stereotype that large-format cameras are always big, heavy, and could even have a wooden body. The goal is the creation of a light and elegant camera with a sensitive touchscreen, without forgoing the large-format sensor. This modern technology would give you the opportunity to get extra high-resolution images, a shallow depth of field, as well as dynamic perspective control (tilt-shift).

The changeable bayonet construction allows any kind of lens from any system available on the market.
Its AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) shutter is installed in the camera body, so you can use shutterless lenses (from focal plane shutter systems).
It is absolutely soundless and lightweight.
The sensor cooling system is important for mirrorless cameras (as the sensor is working permanently).
The symmetrical handle grips allow good ergonomics, for right- and left-handed people.
The large, sensitive touchscreen allows you good operation and control. You don’t need a laptop to see the details anymore.

The IO Camera Concept is a 2012 red dot award: design concept (http://www.red-dot.sg/concept/index.htm) winner.

When Click & Grow became a part of the YD Roadshow in Chennai, I was both ecstatic and weary. Ecstatic that YD will be showcasing such an innovative product and weary that I was to nurture and grow the plant for the event. A beautiful Basil and Cockscomb smartpot arrived at my doorstep and I got started almost immediately. I’ll skip the details on how-to-grow, as it is explained adeptly in the video after the jump and get to more about the experience of growing my first plant ever!If I were to sum it up in a phrase, then the experience of growing a Click & Grow Plant was ‘the easiest thing I have ever done!’ I don’t have a green thumb and zero knowledge of fertilizing a plant; however this did not hamper the progress of my baby.http://www.yankodesign.com/images/design_news/2012/12/02/c_and_g.jpg (http://www.clickandgrow.com/collections/all/products/click-grow-starter-kit-cockscomb-refill?utm_source=YankoDesign&utm_medium=textlink&utm_content=textlink&utm_campaign=YankoDesign)

Basically the Click & Grow smart garden is the combination of a water reservoir and a smart cartridge. The cartridge houses the seeds, sensor, soil and fertilizer for the plant and draws in water from the reservoir. A small pump draws in the required water at regular intervals so that the plant doesn’t suffer from under or overwatering.http://www.yankodesign.com/images/design_news/2012/12/02/c_and_g2.jpg (http://www.clickandgrow.com/collections/all/products/click-grow-starter-kit-cockscomb-refill?utm_source=YankoDesign&utm_medium=textlink&utm_content=textlink&utm_campaign=YankoDesign)

All you need from your end is water and four AA batteries; that is it! You can literally fill-it, shut-it and forget-it. The Flip Headphones
Tweet

The Flip is a hybrid speakers and headphones concept, something that is getting very popular these days. With two modes to use them, the flick of a switch allows you to stream music straight into your ears or share it with friends. Both modes work with your devices using a headphone jack or USB, depending upon how you want to go about it. Awesome!

ave you been trying to find a colorful and fun way for your children to learn table manners? The Landscape Dinner Set (http://www.doiydesign.com/en/product/landscape_dinner_set/32) is just the answer! The design of the set is based on typical children’s drawings – a house for a plate, trees for cutlery, a cloud for a side dish, and the sun is the cup! The goal of the melamine safe dish set is to help teach your kid how to eat properly using cutlery, while playing. Moreover it helps you give them a healthy dinner, separating all the food they need in a tidy and cheerful way! ($30.00)

The Night Gestures

The Night Communication is a solar empowered, LED silicone glove concept that allows people to communicate with gestures even in pitch darkness. Imagine yourself trekking in the woods and there is a considerable distance between you and the others in your party. In situations like this, using common gesture like how we use in scuba diving can help in communicating over the long distance.
These non-slip breathable gloves can be cool accessories even during parties!

Having a walk-in closet is the envy of everyone who lives in smaller spaces where you have to get clever with storing all your clothes. This well-thought wardrobe design is the next best thing. Unlike standard wardrobes where clothes get lost in the darkness (and in turn never worn), it focuses on sensible arrangement and makes sure every item is visible at all times. Better yet, it really feels like a walk-in closet, making it a perfect solution for compact living.

The Stoneven takes the induction cooking stones concept a step further by adding the versatility angle to it. Basically the pebbles can be used collectively to cook in outdoor camps and be used as body warmers. Yeah, the outdoors are rough and rugged, but when you travel in the woods you need appliances and gadgets that can serve more than one purpose. This aspect not only lightens the load but also increases the spectrum of performance.

Photographing The Photographer
Tweet (https://twitter.com/share)
It is an everyday occurrence that you want to be included in the photograph with your family and friends, but end up being the photographer. The Not One Less is a concept that allows you to be in the picture. It has a dual lens, one that focuses on the main subjects and the other on the photographer. Superb idea, I hope Nikon or Canon is listening.

NOTEX is a thoughtful wristband design that’s more than a funky fashion statement- it’s also a helpful tool that allows visually impaired individuals identify paper money. Designed exclusively for the people of India, the steel slap band features four kinks arranged according to the difference in the lengths of Indian rupee bills, which lack Braille or any other tactile identification. Simply snap it off and line the bills up with the end to make out the money and then snap it back on – genius!

The Easy Slicer is a very clever redesign for a canned ham packaging. Basically you can rip open the can with an easy grip and use the included plastic slicer to cut the canned ham into even slices straight in the can! No need for a cutting board or knife, it is especially helpful at picnics and outdoor luncheons.

Maykel Roovers’ latest project, titled Critical Block Miniature World, examines the sharp contrast between the innocent, small world-view of children & the serious, large (and at times painful) adult world. A second glance reveals that these cute toy blocks are a miniature version of a nuclear power plant- a representation of modern political & societal issues for adults… but to children, a harmless play thing. No matter who you are, it’s sure to spark your imagination!

The Ishke system tackles the devastating problem of plastic bottle waste in a new, inventive way that aims to replace plastic bottles with reusable stainless bottles fitted with RFID tags. The tag system facilitates cashless payment and even communicates bottle specifications and user preferences. Situated in public areas, Ishke offers the convenience, taste and trust of bottled water, but provides a brighter alternative to the destructive plastic container.

This far-out concept by Jurmol Yao takes extreme watersports to an entirely new level. The design falls somewhere between a wakeboard and jet ski, with a propulsion system built directly into the bottom of the board, allowing adrenaline junkies to get serious air or even “board” underwater. Here’s the deal with drying cups hygienically. If you store them upright, then there is a chance of dirt/dust falling in. If you place them upside down, then the rim gets dirty once again. So to solve the problem we have here the Bevel Cup, inspired by the angular stance of a ballerina. The angular handle of the Bevel Cup allows it to remain as clean as possible when it is stored after being washed.
Bevel Cup has an angled handle (at 40°angle to horizontal plane) that allows it to stand at an angle, upside down, but resting only on the handle itself. This keeps dust out and germs off the rim. This storage position is also a good indicator that the cup is ready to be used rather than in need of a wash after a previous use.

You may disconnect the charger cable from your device, but the truth is that power consumption continues till you actually switch it off from the mains. We are well aware of this problem and before this Brady Bunch, we have had quite a few designers come up with solutions to resolve it. What we have here is the PowerCutter, a charger cable with a built-in switch inside the socket. One of the entrant wires connects directly to the switch, and it is turned off when the socket is not connected to a device.
As the designers explain, “ thus the main circuit is inoperative and it does not draw energy even though the adaptor is still plugged into the wall outlet. Once the socket is plugged into a device, switch will be operated and the circuit is connected.”
PowerCutter is a 2012 red dot award: design concept (http://www.red-dot.sg/concept/index.htm)winner.

Ok, so the scene may sound complicated in your mind’s eye when you read this, but the truth is that it is a plausible scenario. The Air Umbrella (http://www.yankodesign.com/2010/01/12/try-air-to-stay-dry/) has been in the news lately and I think this Pump Umbrella is a fitting Part – 2 for the design. For all practical purposes we have three main reasons for umbrellas to cause us worry; one when we use it – that it keeps us dry and doesn’t flurry inside out. Second: it should be easily portable. Lastly, after use we need to store it well so that it doesn’t wet the floor (bag or whatever!). So how about a wand-style umbrella that we ‘pump’ into shape and then easily deflate for storing? Super!

know the tech companies are doing their best to come out with a mouse that is sleek and compact enough to compliment a laptop. However I am sure most of you will agree with me that a full bodied mouse is what our hands crave, when we work one with a laptop. So to address the issue or portability and keep with the demand of a fully functional mouse, we have here the Flat CD Mouse Concept. Forget iPhone 5, It’s Time For iPhone 6!
Tweet (https://twitter.com/share)
If you are still dealing with conceptual iPhone 5 phones, then I reckon you are late in the game. The stakes have moved up to the iPhone 6, a concept where the home button is moved to the left side of the phone (used with the thumb), leaving a huge screen space for one to enjoy. In this mockup, Antoine (http://www.yankodesign.com/?s=%22Antoine+Brieux%22+&x=0&y=0&lang=ICL_LANGUAGE_CODE) uses ergonomic grip quite cleverly and formulates it with dimensions 125 mm x 63 mm with a 4.9-inch screen. For a first round of concepts, it looks interesting enough, what do you think?

Well Configured Life
Tweet (https://twitter.com/share)
Steve Jobs once said that people don’t know what they until you show it to them. This is probably why we have independent gadgets now vying for integration with features of mainstream products. Can your tablet take good pictures; is your cellphone smart like a computer; can your MP3 player shoot videos? Not only are we duplicating applications, we are also diluting the individuality of a device. I’m not going to judge on the technology wastage here, instead I’ll update you on concepts like the Lifebook. An idea that integrates a tablet, camera, phone and music player to collectively form the hardware for a laptop! They all work independently to support their unique identity and yet unify to create a magical device.

The proposed Lifebook is a laptop computer concept based on the principle of “shared hardware”. Currently a lot of hardware is wasted when we use separate devices, as there is often a lot of “repeat” of data stored and features. For example if I have my songs on my music player, why do I have to block the same amount of storage on my laptop? Similarly, if I have a processor sitting in my tablet, why can it not also run/assist my laptop? If I have a fully functional camera with its own memory and image processing power, why do I need to have it repeated in my laptop?

Ever been flustered by a broken or missing button right when you are ready to walk out the door? Ah, we have all been through this at one point in our lives. For those like me who detest sewing, the Pin Button is a good option. The Elevated Bathtub is a very thoughtful bathing experience for those who suffer from limited mobility. I have a parent who has both their knees replaced and suffers from sever arthritis, so getting in or out of a bathtub is kinda risky. This unique bathtub allows the user to step into the bath area on a flat base without any hindrance. Split into two main parts, the tub enclosure can be lifted; and the flat base with a showerhead pillar doubles up as a lifting rail for the tub enclosure.
Elevated Bathtub is a 2012 red dot award: design concept (http://www.red-dot.sg/en/) winner.

This temporary mobile housing design aims to provide readily available shelter to those affected by a variety emergencies and disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and fires. Structurally, the unit is composed almost entirely of compressed oriented strand board, making it lightweight and easy to construct. Transportable as a small cube, the design can be set and expanded by lowering one side to create a separate section for sleeping quarters.

OMG this Ketchup Presser is such a clever design! Its one of those things that requires very less explanation and the super cool video demonstrates exactly how you can consume ketchup with fries at your favorite fast-food joint without worrying about contamination through the paper mats or soiled ketchup pillow packs. Simple and Good!

Explore the Urban Jungle in Style

The Urban Pod has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from such a futuristic-looking design- radar for collision warning/parking, tire pressure sensors, fingerprint access, photovoltaic recharging top, head-up display… the list goes on. But what we can’t get over is that this bioplastic hybrid is just so %$&#ing cute! It’s inner-city travel style at its best.

Abstracted Flower-Inspired Lamp
Tweet

The unusual shape of the Tulip lamp more closely resembles a retro-style stool than lamp, but its unique structure supports functionality as a pendant, floor, or directional light as well as a bedside table for lightweight objects. A modern blend of painted ceramic and raw wood contrast nicely with the vintage shape and make it possible to create a variety of color combinations for any room style.

The Foolproof Lock
Tweet (https://twitter.com/share)
My bike got stolen! Benn there, done that; so the focus has to be on how do we stop these bicycle thieves from getting creative at picking locks? Simple, let’s make it a foolproof locking system. Which is why the Saddle Lock looks to be a superb solution. You can quickly lock the bike by pushing back the seat into the locking position and make a quick stop to get your coffee.
Saddle Lock provides a way to quickly lock the rear wheel without the need for additional locking accessories. The seat post swings down around the main frame when a button is pushed. The saddle features a cut-away shape that allows it to sit over the rear wheel. A combination lock allows the release of a special alloy rotating lock that extends from one end of the saddle to the other, securing its connection to the wheel.
Saddle Lock is a 2012 red dot award: design concept (http://www.red-dot.sg/en/) winner.

The Germ-inator
Tweet (https://twitter.com/share)
The HH system offers instant hand disinfection for hospital staff and patient visitors in a more cleanly, fast, and efficient process. Users simply place their hands directly over the unit where two functional solutions are distributed- a hydro-alcoholic solution and plastic micro-ball solution. After scrubbing and washing, users can then place their hands under the unit where a UV DEL light indicates with a white glow areas where bacteria may still exist.

Let’s have a peek at the Mac Pro Concept; a device that combines restraint and confident styling. According to the designer Almasov Aibek, he is looking at changing the perception of computers, and them being heavy boxes that are heavy to carry around. Crafted from aluminum, the front has been redesigned to host USB 3.0 and Power button. Interesting, what do you say?

Better face it now – one day Fluffy’s time will come too! Awww, I know… sad. But here’s a way to remember your long lost pet forever! The Coffin for Pets is more than just a funerary container. Made of 100% biodegradable papier-mâché, the thoughtful design contains a single tree seed that sprouts into new life in the place where your pet was buried. It’s a great (and eco-friendly) way to cope with grief and remember good ol’ Fluffmuffin.

Asthma’s Worst Enemy, Kid’s Best Friend

Parents with children suffering from asthma have only two options for treatment, the nebulizer and inhaler. While the inhaler is easily carried, it’s also less effective at the onset of an attack. Nebbie offers both the effectiveness of the mist nebulizer and the practicality and portability of the inhaler. The equipment is packed into a small, playful character that’s transportable, easy to use and friendlier to kids.

I’m the worst when it comes to losing the tools in my toolbox – I can never find what I need, which is exactly why I’m loving the latest design from Bolt Group. The ReadyTools series keeps all the components in the handle of the tool and a nifty pull-out tray keeps them organized and tucked safely away until the next time you need them. In regular wrench and socket wrench versions, they’re also a great way to save space or take on the move.

The Safest Place to Store Your Naughty Files

Sure, there are passwords and various encryption technologies that protect confidential data, but what about protecting the hardware itself from getting in the wrong hands? Influenced by “old-school” security like padlocks and combination locks, the PE external hard drive aims to secure memory by toughening up the hardware itself. Want access to the info? Gotta know the combination!

Printing A Road

The Road Printer is a device that can be used to print road-signs directly onto the road surface. As opposed to the tedious job of hand-painting the signs, this device looks at making the task easier and precise. A set of templates like Stop, U Turn, Bus, Arrow Signs etc. are pre-programmed into the device and are jet-sprayed to the surface. The menu buttons are large enough to endure a boot or a push from your fingers. A solar panel on the top-end helps in charging the thang.

A paint cartridge swings from side-to-side between the track wheels, spraying the selected icon to the road. The paint reservoir is fitted at the rear and can be easily refilled.
Overall a nice, perceptive design; something my country could very well use. Where I live, we have a lot of red-tape even to get roads painted. First they have a tender floated for getting the job done, and then the contractors take their sweet time, disrupt traffic and still do a shoddy job of the markings. If the Road Printer will do the perfect job with a quick, drying paint…life in traffic will be a tad bit easier!

the Tea Cup SlingsHOT

I never realized that dealing with a tea bag was so frustrating! Admittedly, I’m also more of a coffee drinker… but I can still see why the SlingsHOT Tea Cup is appealing. The slit in the handle keeps the tag from falling in and allows the user to squeeze the liquid out of the soaked bag simply by pulling back as you would a slingshot. Just be careful not to pop yourself in the eye!

Watering is an innovative water purifier intended for singles. It can be wall mounted and features a blue leaf that indicates the number of glasses you have consumed during the day. It is recommended that we consume at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day, so with each rotation, the blue leaf keeps a track of the number glasses consumed. You can customize the temperature and other features to suit your needs. I like it more for the fact that it integrates so well as a funky wall art décor!

For educational purposes in windy areas, where the student is in distance to the instructor, radio controlled instructions are vital. Nowadays in order to hear the instructions from the walkie-talkie, the student had to attach the bulky and heavy walkie-talkie directly to the helmet (http://www.tuvie.com/modern-stylish-and-foldable-helmet-every-cyclist-has-been-dreaming-of/).
The solution is the “Molecule” headset. The student has one placed in his helmet ear pad (receiving signals) and one in his Aquapack (sending signals from his walkie-talkie). This system is compatible with existent Walkie-Talkies on the market.

The Citroen DS BiRotor merges the aesthetic attention to detail of top-end brands with the efficiency & economic sensibility of modern hybrid-drive vehicles. Laser headlights, AMOLED driver interface, carbon fiber everywhere, & a photosensitive polycarbonate roof/windows are just a few of the pros… but what sets it apart are the innovative tires which adapt to weather & driver demands by expanding & contracting to allow for water flow, increased traction, or higher efficiency. Hit the jump to see how it works!

Inspired by the monocle and the color wheel, this LEICA X3 concept looks at picking the best features found on smartphones and marrying them with the ones found on a digital camera. So basically this is a lovechild that is the size of a lens and transfers the pictures instantly to your smartphone, tablet or Mac via Bluetooth. The camera is automatically turned on when the lens is flipped out and a simple user interface allows you take pictures in a jiffy.

Specs include both manual and automatic control for aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I like the direction of this concept; it aims at tapping into the future of photography and brings a totally new dimension to the modern habit of sharing pictures with the world.

Designer Francisco Ulla’s concept for a Toyota brand Hybrid Bike focuses on use of lightweight materials and straightforward functionality of its electric motor that together offer efficient mobility in the city. The small rechargeable motor is located in the crankset near the pedal and provides instantaneous assisted power on command using the handlebar throttle. Composed almost entirely of aluminum and bioplastic, the design upholds Toyota’s modern eco-conscious direction making it a perfect compliment to the hybrid city car.

Designed with small businesses, merchants, and local agriculturalists in mind, Ceal is an innovative tool that makes it possible to easily close up almost any type of bag. No bigger than a blow-dryer, the lightweight, durable device can quickly and safely seal produce, clothing, or any other dry good. The stitching pattern won’t provide an air-tight hold, but it’s a great solution for cheaper, portable way to prepare bagged items for transportation or bulk selling.

It’s an age-old agenda, to have the perfect setup that allows you to work on the computer endlessly and yet maintain the correct posture. Time and again specialists insist and designers execute ideas that support an ergonomic table and chair, ideal for computer usage. Biuro is just that.
Biuro is an ergonomic desk for appropriate laptop use. It is meant to avoid musculoskeletal problems caused by a wrong posture. It allows the user to have a better position while working on this laptop, thanks to a tablet, which raises the height of the screen.

P.S. This also validates the Dieter Rams principle that good design needs to be simple!
As the designer duo Joshua Resnikoff and Aaron Panone articulate it, ‘the canning jar makes an awesome platform for a travel mug: it’s easy to clean, made of heat-resistant glass, cheap, durable, and when sealed it doesn’t leak.’ And to plug the problem of their large openings and drinking-spills, the eco-friendly plastic lid does its bit. Made in the USA, phthalate and BPA free, CUPPOW (http://cuppow.com) is recyclable, and it doesn’t break the bank!
http://www.yankodesign.com/images/design_news/2013/03/04/cuppow2.jpg (http://cuppow.com)
Currently there are several variations available: The Original Cuppow Wide, The Original Cuppow Wide – Orange, The Original Cuppow Regular with Straw-Tek and The Original Cuppow Regular with Straw-Tek – Blue.
http://www.yankodesign.com/images/design_news/2013/03/04/cuppow5.jpg (http://cuppow.com)
Essentially, all you need to do is place the CUPPOW (http://cuppow.com) on the canning jar, screw on the lid securely and you are ready to go! Just remember, 5 CUPPOWS (http://cuppow.com) that are in colors are all paired with charitable initiatives that receive 5% of the profit from those products.

http://www.marineco.ir/images/ship-types/pontoon-type-catamaran.gif

http://www.marineco.ir/images/ship-types/basic-catamaran.gif

The Trignal is a self-charging LED Light that is fitted to a truck’s wheel as a hubcap. It not only glows at night, giving other motorists fair warning of the truck’s presence on the road but also visually communicates its speed. If the truck is moving at a safe pace then the wheels glow a demure green. If the driver is being rash and tardy then it glows a bright red.
The hubcaps may not make sense on well-lit highways of the West, but I know for a fact the highways of many Asian countries can do with this hub-light system. It would probably save many lives.
The Tringal is a 2012 Liteon Award (http://www.liteonaward.com)winning entry.

Yet Another iPhone 6

One of the reasons why many people buy a fender for their iPhone is that the back surface tends to scratch pretty easily, especially in the iPhone 5. Designer Matt Hughson envisions the iPhone 6 (http://www.yankodesign.com/?s=%22iphone+6%22&x=0&y=0&lang=ICL_LANGUAGE_CODE) to come designed with an integrated aluminum outer frame, which creates a protective lip for the front & back of the phone. This provides improved protection for your screen & camera.
The cut away in the upper left corner gives the phone an added functionality in the form of a slot. This gives the user an attachment feature as well as lock-ability. The main screen maximizes the available space allowing for more wide screen view-ability.

Here is a thought, why confine portability to a laptop, why not have portable desktops? I know for a fact that if I had the chance, my 27-inch iMac would travel with me everywhere. Coming out of dreamland and into reality, here is the Cover Keyboard offering a more realistic way of travelling with our computer. It gets neatly packed into a carry bag and what’s more, the extendable interactive keyboard is really cool! What do you think?

Move over Roomba! Limbo Robot is sort of like your own personal Mars-rover… only instead of being plutonium powered, it actually harnesses the energy of the waste it “consumes” from cleaning your kitchen and other areas! It uses a process called microbial electrolysis; a proven process that uses bacteria as a power source. The flexible honeycomb wheels allow it to move over obstacles and even collapse to help guide it up stairs.

The Safety Light is a lighting system that kicks into action once the streets get flooded and are under water. As a thumb rule its safer not to use vehicles during this time, but these lights are meant for those folks who are simply stuck and need to move out of harm’s way. The design combines LED, an H2O battery and traditional Cat Eyes Road Studs.Rain water activates the H2O battery’s energy to light the LED light beams, creating a road guide that can lead car drivers safely through flooded areas, reducing accidents during heavy rainfall.
