Everyone says they want to succeed. Now what success means varies from individual to individual, but as a whole, success is something that we are taught to strive for throughout our lives, whether it is in personal or career goals. Unfortunately most people do not like change and because of this it is hard to advance.
The problem is that if we are taught to strive for success and want to succeed, but refuse to accept change. By rejecting the thing that helps us advanced, there is no way innovation can happen. The question everyone should be asking is, How I can leverage creativity to help me be successful?
According to Josh Linker, Author and Founder of ePrize, creativity has become the most needed skill in business. It’s gone from a nice-to-have to becoming mission-critical. He also states that Creativity is a learned behavior. All humans have enormous creative potential.
If this is the case, then there are a lot of opportunities for individuals to achieve success by being creative. Every group, team, and organization can be improved in some shape or form. If an organization does not believe this, they are bound to fail because they are failing to innovate and optimize efficiencies of processes that currently exist within the organization as their competitors constantly improve. A great way to launch an organization to the next level so that they can succeed is by creative thinking and problem solving.
Creativity does not mean you will think of an idea that is as profitable and successful as Facebook, but it does mean that you are looking at things from a new prospective. There is a saying that “practice makes perfect”, but in reality this is not true. Someone could do something wrong or inefficiently 1000 times and never improve because they are doing it wrong. Similarly, someone might have years and years of experience doing something, but refuses to change or innovate with the times. A saying that makes more sense, and is true, is “perfect practice makes perfect”.
With this said in your next meeting try to approach things from a new direction. Instead of being content with the way things currently are and supporting processes that have always been in place, examine what is currently wrong with them and think of how to make it better. Try a group brainstorm and instead of criticizing every idea someone has, think of ways to improve them and ways the idea could work. This will take time and effort, especially if you are not used stepping outside the box, but in the long run everyone will benefit.
This is by no means easy. In most cases when someone presents something new to a group of people that is not used to change the idea immediately gets shot down. This can be hard for the individual presenting the idea and for the idea itself to succeed.
If you develop an idea that is effective, not only will the organization be happy because of the improved efficiencies which will most likely save them money, but you will be recognized as an individual who wants to improve the organization and make things better. If your ideas do not get implemented you will still standout as someone who wants the company to succeed.
In summary, try something new and think creatively. It is okay if people shoot your ideas down because if anything, you are looking for better solutions than what currently exists and when you do develop a winning idea, it will be well worth the effort.
