Qatar is bidding to host the World Cup in 2022, and now they’ve got Foster + Partners backing them up with a stunning energy-efficient world-class football stadium. The Lusail Iconic Stadium was revealed today at the Leaders in Football conference in London, and it will be large enough to seat over 86,000 spectators. Built specifically for the extreme summer conditions of the capital city Doha, the stadium will be stay cool in the hot, hot heat and also generate solar power from the parking lot canopiessurrounding the stadium.

Foster + Partners’ stadium adds a big name to Qatar’s bid for the World Cup in 2022. The country is currently competing against eight other bids for the 2018 and 2022 games, including Australia, South Korea, the United States, England, Japan, Russia, Spain and Portugal, and Belgium and The Netherlands. F+P project has been designed as the main stadium for Doha, the Capital of Qatar, and it would be used for the opening ceremonies and opening games as well as the final matches. The stadium is characterized by a saddle-shaped roof that appears to float above the concrete seating bowl with a retractable canopy that can fully open or close. A reflective pool of water encircles the entire stadium and spectators must cross a moat to reach the eco stadium.The Lusail Iconic Stadium will provide optimum views for all spectators in a cool and comfortable setting regulated by environmentally friendly cooling technologies. Located in a new development in the north of Doha, the stadium will be accessed by a new metro line and direct roads, which are expected to spur the growth of the area. Solar panels will be installed on canopies over parking and service areas in order to generate renewable energy for the stadium when it’s in use, and they will power the surrounding neighborhood when there are no games.
